Contours and highlighters – Korean trends

Contours and highlighters – Korean trends

Have you ever been to Korea? Or watched Korean dramas? If so, you may have heard the compliment, “your face is so small!” We Koreans believe small faces, sharp v-lines, big eyes with double eyelids and dewy soft skin is the epitome of beauty. Which is why so many of us strive to reach this ideal. In fact, Korea has a unique group of celebrities called ulzzangs (which literally  means “great face”) who are famous for possessing these qualities and many wish to emulate them by copying their beauty secrets!

Contouring

One way to achieve this look is by contouring. Now, in Korea, this is a relatively new trend but its not identical to that in the West. After all, we still believe youthful, dewy complexions with a natural glow and barely there, innocent makeup is the key to beauty so killer cheekbones are not desired!

Accordingly, contours and highlighters are advertised as products that help you achieve a “small face”.

Directions

Contrary to popular belief, Korean style contouring is very simple and easy to follow!

Step 1: Apply your favorite cushion foundation

We love the following:

[April Skin] Magic Snow Cushion

Step 2: Contour  your jawline (to create that coveted v-shaped chin line), cheekbones and hairline (to create an impression of a smaller face).

Step 3: Apply on both sides of your nose for a thinner more defined look. Now blend everything.

Here are our favorite contouring products:

[Etude House] Play 101 Stick Contour Duo

[MEMEBOX} Easy Shading Stick

[W.Lab] 3D Face Shading Contour Stick

Step 4: Use a highlighter on your forehead, bridge of your nose and apples of your cheek to emphasize and blend.

You can use the following to do this:

[April Skin] 4D Stick

[Etude House] Play 101 Stick Multi-color

Step 5: Apply blusher to the tops of your cheeks. Ideally it should be brushed on above the area that was contoured, a little higher than the apples of your cheeks.

Try this:
